Wijnkronieken on Biodynamic, Organic, and Natural Winemaking
In this new book they present interesting very structured facts about biodynamic, organic and natural wines. The book is primarily aimed at consumers who want to understand what’s hidden behind the labels ‘organic’, ‘biodynamic’, ‘natural’ and ‘sustainable’.
But also the wine professional, both in the wine trade and in the hospitality industry, can find a lot in this book because it explains in very clear language what the facts behind organic, biodynamic and natural wines.
The descriptions of the winemaking process are detailed and provide an excellent insight into a process that is all too often overly simplified. Personally, I found many illuminating passages that greatly enriched my understanding of winemaking.
The central theme is organic viticulture and wine production, but the book also explains all other related terms: sustainable viticulture and the relationship with the environment, and the principles of biodynamic viticulture and the ‘natural’ wine movement.
What is also positive is that much attention is given to the legislation in different countries, and to the definitions. Because they can often be different in different places. What in Europe can be called an organic may not necessarily be that in the US!
What I also like is that the authors do not push their own opinions on to the reader and do not try to convince the reader of what is the right methods to make wine. The emphasis is on backgrounds, assumptions, facts and rules. With this information, the reader can then form their own opinion and make choices based on solid information.
Biodynamic, organic and natural winemaking. Sustainable viticulture and viniculture.
