Swedish wine producers have created a new trade association called Swedish Trade Organization for Oenology & Viticulture (SBOV). Emma Serner, the founder of Långmyre Winery on the island of Gotland, is the new association president.
Sweden currently has around 100 hectares of vineyards. Still, the association estimates that 10,000 hectares are suitable for grape growing in the southern regions of Halland, Skåne and Blekinge, the Baltic islands of Öland and Gotland as well as on Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern. “I see great opportunities for farmers in Sweden to take advantage of our climate and the new fungus-resistant piwi varieties and to be able to produce good sustainable locally produced wines”, says Lotta Nordmark at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
