Barca Velha was long thought of as the only Portuguese table wine in the top quality echelons. Today, there is much more company in that category in Portugal thanks to the fabulous renaissance that Portuguese winemaking has seen over the last few decades. But Barca Velha undoubtedly retain it’s status as an almost mythological wine. It is made in the upper Douro valley and belongs nowadays to the Sogrape Group, one of Portugal’s biggest wine producers. The vintage 2000 has just been released in 26,000 bottles and 1500 magnums.
