Portugal has a treasure trove of outstanding wines but few – far too few – find their way outside of Portugal. One of the few that is known all over the world is Periquita from the José Maria da Fonseca company, one of the most successful Portuguese wine producers. What is perhaps less known is that JM da Fonseca makes a very wide range of wines. More than forty wines is in their full range, from easy-drinking every-day wines like Periquita and Lancers to very high quality wines made from traditional Portuguese grape varieties.

Undoubtedly JM da Fonseca is not only one of the oldest wine companies in Portugal but also one of the most successful, both on the domestic market and on export.

Here’s the introduction:

Periquita is one of Portugal’s and the world’s most famous wine brands. And probably one of the very first. The first bottle of Periquita was sold already in 1850. Today Periquita is still a very strong brand with worldwide recognition. Over 1.5 million bottles are produced annually.

Periquita is made by wine company José Maria da Fonseca, located in the charming little village of Azeitão on the Setubal peninsula, south of Lisbon. José Maria da Fonseca founded his firm in 1834. This means that José Maria da Fonseca is Portugal’s oldest wine company for table wines (some port wine houses have been around longer).
