Matthew Stowell, former editor of the short-lived but influential Cyprus Gourmet magazine (founded by Patrick Skinner), is an American writer who has lived and worked in Cyprus since 2005. He began writing for the Chicago Reader newspaper in the mid-1970s and went on to write for various publications in San Francisco, Boston and Virginia. In 1978, he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Criticism. He has also worked as a VW mechanic, construction laborer, bartender, cook, proofreader, paralegal, English teacher and winery worker. He has written restaurant reviews and a regular Sunday column for the Cyprus Mail. He has published more than 100 wine and food articles for e.g. Cyprus Gourmet, the Financial Mirror, and for the many in-house magazines (Four Seasons, Amathus Beach Hotel, Columbia, Londa, Mediterranean Beach Hotel, Aphrodite Hills, Kanika, Limassol Marina, Carob Mill, Louis Travel, Cyprus Airlines and Hermes Airports). In the U.S. Cyprus and the U.K., under various pen names, he has published poetry and short stories as well as two mystery novels (Roll Away the Stone and Blind Faith) featuring the Cypriot amateur sleuth, Stavros Odysseos.
