From a wine perspective this is of moderate interest. But from an economic and business perspective it can be interesting.
In Sweden more than half of all wine that is sold in the monopoly shops (“Systemboalget”) are sold in bag-in-box. In Sweden they call it box wine. Other countries have other names for it: cubitaner in France, cask in some Anglo-Saxon countries.
There are 130 different bag-in-box wines in the permanent selection (“fasta sortimentet”) at Systembolaget. These 130 brands account for around half of all wine sold. (There is also a “temporary” range and an “on order from importer” range, but they account for small volumes.)
