Most people think of powerful, intense red wines when thinking of wines from Chile. Think again! Today Chile also makes outstanding white wines that are elegant, fresh, mineral and aromatic, and even very good pinot noir. Vina Casa Marin is one of the pioneers in this kind of wines in Chile.
Casa Marin was created in the early 2000 by Maria Luz Marin and has since its creation become a leading light in this new style of Chilean wines. The winery and the vineyards are in the San Antonio Valley, just south of Valparaiso. It is the Chilean wine region that is closest to the sea. It does not actually have a sea view but is only a ten minute drive from the sea.

Here’s the introduction:
Chilean wines come in many different styles. Many more than you would imagine, actually. This is obvious not least when you go to the coastal regions. San Antonio Valley is one, situated a little south of the enticing harbor city of Valparaiso. Here in San Antonio, just a few kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, oenologist Maria Luz Marin decided to create a vineyard in 2000.
“Everyone thought I was crazy”, she says. “Too cool for vines was everyone’s opinion.” But she persisted and now, with winemaker son Felipe, she makes award winning wines.
“In a way this is a radical vineyard climate”, says Felipe. “We have the influence from the cold Pacific waters which brings us a lot of fog. It happens that we harvest our Syrah grapes in May at only 12 % potential alcohol.”
