Uncorked: Under this heading we collect various wines that we have tasted, and liked, recently. It can be wines that we have had during dinner at home, at wine tastings, press lunches, visits to vineyards, or other occasions.
We describe the wines just with a few short sentences, tasting notes that we hope will give you a short but accurate impression of what we thought of the wine, without delving into finer points tasting notes.
This month we focus on some gems that we found in the wine cellar. A mixed bag of:
- Bordeaux
- Penedes
- Chateauneuf-du-Pape
- California
- Côte Rôtie
- Burgundy…
Some inspiration for more wine discoveries! As well as a perspective on what to expect from older wines.

- Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 1983, Graves
Very mature wine, dark in colour, oxidized, nutty, good if you like that style (and we do).
- Torres Gran Coronas Mas La Plana Reserva 1983 (well, actually, at that time it was probably better known as “Black Label”, not Mas La Plana, if I remember correctly)
Delicious. Old in style but still fresh, aromas of tobacco leaf, still structured.
- Clos des Papes 1990, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Slightly over the hill. Thin body and too much alcohol.
- Domaine du Chevalier 1993, Pessac-Léognan Rouge
Easy drinking wine from a light year. But very nice fruit and a pleasure to drink.
- Château Lynch Moussas 1991, Pauillac
Typical Bordeaux aromas of tobacco and cedar wood, good ripeness, rather light in body. Some tannins still. Drinks perfectly now.
- Ridge California Zinfandel York Creek 1985
Powerful, very rich and intense, concentrated flavours, a bit like a Syrah.
- Côte Rôtie 1994, Pierre Gaillard
Aromas of tobacco and cedar, feels like an old Bordeaux. Good ripeness, smooth and velvety very attractive.
- Auxey-Duresses blanc 1999, Domaine Vincent Prunier
Intense and rich, nicely integrated oak, full-bodied, ripe but still vibrant and fruity. Delicious.
